The areas known as Chugiak and Peters Creek were first settled in the early 1950s and were primarily dependent on agriculture. The name Chugiak came from a native word that means place of many places. The communities were annexed to the Municipality of Anchorage in 1975. Due to their close proximity to Joint Base Elmendorf-Richardson, Chugiak and Peters Creek have grown to become thriving communities.
